A View Point
Just as H1N1 started taking its toll, the media frenzy has created a panic. Why is Swine flu such a big deal? Let’s see.
Swine Flu is highly contagious; a person can catch it with just a sneeze from another. A person, who is not infected with H1N1, can still be a carrier of the same. If not treated, before a certain spread in the body, it’s a quick killer. In order to, spread awareness so as to contain the disease, the media has been a potent weapon - Hats Off to it.
But, what lies on the surface is not always the only reason. So let’s remove the dust and try to dig inside. We all love to accuse the media of over hyping things by sensationalizing them; hence we can say the media played on the commercial value of such news. But has it not been of any help?
The media, and by that I don’t mean newspaper or TV channels only but also SMS’s, emails, blogs etc, have spread a sense of urgency for understanding the disease. We can just GOOGLE H1N1 or Swine flu and with in seconds we get a list of thousand sites to read from. Every site will tell us about the origin of the disease, have a list of symptoms, tell us how to avoid it and give a list of possible treatments in the face of this large looming threat. All this has surely helped everyone (people - with precautionary steps & media - with money). And I am not taking any sides today. Everything which has advantages comes with its set of disadvantages too, be it an allopath medicine or a building military weapon. But I will be putting forward a few observations I have made this free time of mine.
A day before, I got a couple of SMS’s and mails, regarding Swine flu. I would like to pick up two very interesting examples each from a different medium. First the SMS which said “Read this prayer twice a day to avoid Swine flu”. A simple and beautiful gesture showing that someone cares. The message must have been passed by people to their friends, family and loved one. But, while reading this message, I found it had a very strong religious bias (which I’ll not mention). This shows how, the person who started this message, would not stop to take advantage of even such a situation. The other was an e-mail, it said “Important Unpublicized preventive steps reg H1N1 – from a doctor”. Very conveniently he writes that the media hype is about use of N95 masks as tools to prevent Swine flu. And then he assumes the position of Baba Ramdev and says because “A friend wants me to write down briefly what advice I have for people. Hence the email” Some of the advice he has given are simple to adhere and might be effective as daily practices. Wash hands frequently, gargle twice a day with salt water, clear nostrils with warm liquid and drink warm liquids as much as possible. Finally he says these all are less painful than to wait in long queues outside public hospitals and ends satirically, saying “Happy Breathing”. Now, it cannot be verified if he/she is a real doctor or any x-y-z collecting information and sending emails, which are in-turn being forwarded as chain mails with titles such as “Nice precautionary steps” etc. Hence, repercussions could be many. I don’t want to make any value judgments here either. What I want to stress here is that media is a means of disseminating information, whether true or false is for everyone to decide, and not follow blindly.
Finally, we never see media make hype about TB, which kills about 2 million people a year across the globe, or heart disease which is the highest killer according to 2001-03 survey. Never will there be a hype about the lack of basic amenities to people. Not undermining their efforts to spread awareness about Swine, I am still pained by the kind of neglect shown to bigger threats which have stayed on for decades together. When they can create a revolution then why don't they? At this point a thing comes to my mind, is it because the media belives to server certain sections of the society. The upper class can afford treatment of TB and Heart disease and hardly anyone who gets treatment for them dies. This leaves, the poor and the down trodden to face such threats alone.
Swine flu is a novel disease and the upper class is terrified. The debate is similar to “Why was Mumbai Terror Attack of 26/11” made such a big hype, while about the same time the “Attacks in Assam killing almost the same number of humans” neglected and made a small 4x4 news in the side realms of news papers. In Mumbai, the upper class got hurt and hence the frenzy (this doesn’t go to say there shouldn’t have been an uproar). I am not again the upper class or anyone, as someone might accuse me of, but I as a media student I am pained by the branding of certain sections/classes as children of a lesser God.
Swine was carried from other countries to our by the air-travellers and has become a threat to the whole country. With SARS also such frenzy was visible. Let’s hope Swine meets the same fate and disappears from the face of the earth and so does the bias (towards or against).
* Media is the plural for medium. It is important to understand that media is not only the TV Channels and Newspapers; it’s a much more omnipresent phenomenon. SMS’s, e-mails, blogs etc also attribute to media.

i would like to appreciate the authors degree of analysis in the SMS' case. seriously, i would have at the most deleted the msg finding an orthodox touch with the issue at hand, but the author has flipped the coin and gave us the other aspect which is ppl taking advantage of even such a pandemic to suffuse their religios beliefs. kudos to you!!
I think author pointed to a great point or you can say the real nature of media which is always biased bcoz of two things...
1. How to carry out news for 24X7. They always need some topic due to which they can grab attention of ppl.
2.In current scenario Media focused only those areas from which they can make money.Media doesn't bother the impact of news...
One thing if anyone noticed or not that before swine flu news "Australian attacks on Indian students" was the BREAKING NEWS. Suddenly what happened either they stopped attacks or media got new point to highlight.
Believe me, the number of deaths by swine flu would also be a statistical report with the passage of time. The mainline media would have better things to attract eyeballs. And here a confusion comes to my mind about the mutual relationship of the medium and its audience. Whether the way the Media informs them is because the audience desires /is curious to see/hear/read this way or the media actually brings out the real life or in fact its just some vicious circle. Any which ways, it shows a bad reflection of our society mostly. Over all, May be We as a country lack people who like taking responsibilities. We rather take convenient ways out to earn our living even at individual levels. We even dont react until something drastic or ghastly happens and when we do, we over react and I think the Media of every form becomes comprised of many such individuals.
Also, the use of SMS and the email as nicely brought out here has become a revolutionary form of disseminating a message today and is definitely open to good as well as mis use and more importantly, it is more individualistic. So in an over democratic country like ours (for the higher middle class, the powerful politicians and so called Elites ones), many a times people use it to their best not just to express but rather influence which might have a negative aspect too.
A nice piece of writing Vishal, raising many questions indeed apart from the swine flu which many of are struggling with directly or indirectly! I added my little confused VIEWPOINT. Hope you get more so that we all come down to what role being media we actually need to play now.
The hype is necessary not only for the comfortable upper class but especially for the lower BPL classes where the disease will spread as an epidemic if precautionary actions not taken. And as you say the upper class can still afford the treatment, vaccination but can the poor. No. The government has also imported the vaccination to only government hospitals and selected private ones to be available to all.
As far as media neglecting TB, heart attacks, its not so. It is indeed to the efforts of media that DOTs(treatment of TB) is free today. Information about AIDs, detection of HIV, and making the patients acceptable in society ..is thanks to media.
Media is not class defined. Its for all. Just a "View Point" we choose to brand it with
But at the end I must say this is the malfunctioning of our social system, and not greed these people since it us who gave media an hour for this kind of news and vote for these people and this is some thing only we can improve
moving to class bias, its difficult to say media is not because the money comes from Middle & Upper Class and TRP's from Lower (TAM meters installed to manipulate these ratings in their houses like in Dharavi, Mumbai).. I picked up a small eg and was talking about a larger way in which media is working ..
moving on to the govt. the officials are fighting amongst themselves over petty issues (in the face of an pandemic) like, is this a state matter or a central govt. matter? ..
Swine came in through the airport .. if proper procedures were followed there (by state or centre), it is quite possible, Swine would never have spread into our country .. but it took deaths of people and media "hoo-halla" for the govt. to just think about what is happening .. thats the point where I thank media for being the 4th Estate ..
As Vipul says political parties are putting H1N1 symbols over there posters, thats also media (read the definition at the end of the blog) and exhibits how people misuse or take advantage. And yes we people accept news being pelted out to us and also choose the leaders to run the country so we need to change our selves to bring a change in the system
The best thing about the write-up is its flow, however i feel that you are biased against various forms of media. It is true that TB and other deadly disease is taking more lives, but I can tell you that Swine Flu is more dangerous. First, because of its nature of spread and also because if your disease is not detected within 48 hours, there is every probability that the patient will die. Again, Tamiflu has very serious cmplications. I agree that there has been immense media hype, because there was no "newsworthy" incidents happening at that time but I also feel that the overall result was positive and it all came in favour of the common public.
Sorry for disagreeing about media and its role but anyways, I enjoyed reading.....
Sumit, I finally want to end the discussions about this blog, by saying the media in such cases should wake not after the disaster has happened, but start the campaign as early as possible. In swine case if the hype was created earlier, the govt. would have taken proper measures, even before the first person brought Swine flu through the airport. Also it would be a possibility that Swine would have been restricted to the airports and the infected immediately Quarantined. Surely the govt's action, as ever, were not up to the mark.
Also till now I don't see proper facilities in North India to tackle Swine. Media is not making a hype about this and making the authorities aware or lets say force the authorities to step up to the task. Is it waiting for the pandemic to spread in these areas also, before it starts the hype again.
Now if someone says media is not wake up the govt. then we will be back to square one. Please think and make your own opinion and decision.
a well written analytical post....
Agree with the ultimate power part!!
nice :)
As far as i m concerned Swine Flu is one of the deadliest diseases .
Media certainly has played an important role in spreading so called "awareness". But awareness was just confined to death toll;masks;--- etc. Instead of that if they wud hv emphasized on a simple fact that for a person having strong immunity,Swine Flu isn't of much harm and what are the ways to increase immunity dat wud have been much better.
Media is scaring people rather than helping them. Lower class people strictly follow what news channels say so they should be responsible enough not to scare them.
Neways i am not a great supporter of media so i won't appreciate them ever bt still nicely accomplished.. Vishal
